The units started their operation from March 2017 and are working as first responder to the scene of crime. In 2019, Government further expanded these facilities to other four (04) Commissionerates (Siliguri, Asanol-Durgapur, Chandannagar, Barrackpore) including one special unit for CID,W.B and subsequently, established a new division – Crime Scene Management Division (C.S.M.D.) under which all MFUs will perform cohesively. Since inception the units are working as first responders to the scene of crime, lifting credible evidence (Biological, Chemical, Physical & Digital) , documenting scientific observation and organizing Forensic training to the IOs on a regular basis. All operational MFUs are currently located in their respective Police Commisionerates with state-of-the-art crime scene investigation facilities.
