Forensic enquiry is an inalienable part of the Criminal Justice System. The forensic scientists help the investigating agencies in detecting cases and provide expert opinion which is relied upon as evidence in Courts. Forensic Science Laboratory, Kolkata, the oldest forensic science laboratory in India, has Physics, Ballistics, Questioned Documents, Photography, Crime Scene Management, Cyber Forensics, Chemistry, Toxicology, Narcotics, Biology, Serology, Foot Print, DNA and POCSO cases Sections at present. We are in the process of establishing Explosives section. Also, establishing Wildlife Forensics and Forensic Psychology sections is also under consideration.
The Crime Scene Management Division (CSMD) established in 2019 comprises of 9 Mobile Forensic Units (MFU) for all the City Police units in the State and CID, West Bengal to work as quick response forensic Units. The Units are engaged in examining scene of crime and lifting of credible scientific evidences for sending the same to the laboratory and provides scientific support and training to the concerned investigating officers. Providing mobile forensic units for all the districts is under process.
Two Regional Forensic Science Laboratories (RFSLs) one at Jalpaiguri comprising Toxicology, Biology and Serology Sections and another at Durgapur comprising Toxicology Section are also operational at present. We are in the process of establishing another RFSL at Malda.
Despite shortage of manpower our scientists and staff are striving hard to meet up the growing requirement of forensic support. Efforts are being made to modernize the laboratory and to open new and emerging streams. Since, fighting crime effectively is contingent on providing expert forensic opinion in time, it is our constant endeavour to provide quality and professional opinion promptly.
